Words badly woven

The words are correct. But they're not necessarily in the right order.

Poem: Gun-ho, Then Gone

Well, it's definitely been a while....Here's one a wrote whilst on a Poetry School course (more on that later). But until then, enjoy this!

no more fish and chip Fridays
no more Sundays in bed
no more slaphappy Saturdays
leaving us sore in the head
we used to be drunk on love
soused on each other’s allure
but the haze that used to blind us
blinkers our vision no more

no more salsas in the kitchen
no lamplight serenades
no more just-go-for-it moments
or sick-note holidays
the glee of feeling fancy-free
no longer swells our cores
and so this Catherine wheel of highs
will spit out sparks no more

no more adventures down alleyways
no more strolls through the quays
no more spontaneous food fights
by the tills at Sainsbury’s
the cold cups of coffee post midnight
the goodnight kisses at the door
the I-love-you cries yelled down our street
will wake the neighbours no more

Poem: First Address In Office

My dozens of followers (okay - my very few) have probably seen this poem already on my Twitter feed from when I posted it last month. But hell - there's no harm posting it again on the actual blog. With the lingering smell of a US presidential election filling the air (which I imagine is a mixture of BBQ sauce and gunpowder) , I felt it was only fair to post a political poem to celebrate the occasion. A rather satirical look on it, but you can probably tell, I don't rate political leaders highly....

I’ll devote all of my remaining years
Sputtering lies you’d want to hear
With old clichés that’ll endear
Me to your worthless hearts.

I’ll act antibacterial clean,
Keep the posh and penniless keen
And suffocate what shan’t be seen.
These lips dare not impart

The treachery, the mulled treason,
The cabinet gossip of the season
Or half a single goddamn reason
For things I’ll do and have done.

And with all I’ve learnt from my BSc
And my stint in the school’s debating team
I’ll decide what should and shouldn’t be
As my word is second to none.

So come! Be leashed and follow me
Through creeks and coves of uncertainty.
Bow down onto a soiled knee
For your undependable son.

Better believe it....

Sorry for my prolonged absence and lack of posting on here. I wanted to take a few weeks away form this, write some more poems (ones which are worth sharing), meeting up with mates and....playing FIFA 17.

To make up for this, I'll be posting some of my favourite poems I've written over the past month. Here's one I want to share because it ties in splendidly well with today  :) Hope you enjoy!

You nuzzled into my fresh stubble
Whilst remnants of hardened toffee
Nested in the crack of your lips.
Our eyes following the flares heading sky bound
Until our necks jarred back, upon crackled impact.

But then the late autumn frost
Took grasp of our spines
Sending them into numb spasm.
We drew to the conclusion
That now as the hour to perhaps retreat
To the warmth indoors.

Poem: Naked in Rome

Aha - another song lyric that I have tried to convert into a poem! A silly one to spruce up your Tuesday morning. Please note that this is not based on real events...

A scorching 31 degrees, I stand here alone.
A European paradise compared to back home.
A suitcase and guitar in hand
Hunting adventure on foreign land
Soon I’ll be stripped down to the bone - left naked in Rome.

In early siesta hours she caught my eager eye.
Her coffee skin, her LA smile left me mesmerized
Her words I couldn’t understand
It all came clear when she took my hand
And down some streets nobody knows to get naked in Rome.

She then force-fed me some chardonnay
That she had smuggled from Calais
But wait – no tannins in its taste-
Her glass doesn’t look the same
She cackled as I passed out on the floor.

Woken from a drugged up haze-I’ve been out cold for hours.
My clothes and cash have been removed, my sweat now tasting sour.
My limbs are all that I have left
To get me out of this sodding mess
I’m penniless, nowhere to go, stuck naked in Rome.

Tips for creating the ultimate writing playlist

9/24/2016

Call me crazy – but I don’t enjoy working or writing in complete and utter silence. But I also don’t like getting distracted. I need to get in a Zen-like zone every time I try and write a poem.
Picture
Music helps me whilst I attempt to express my genius and wit. But it certainly does not help when I have to change the song every few seconds – most of time it’s because a rubbish pop or RnB number starts blaring out of my laptop speakers, one that my brother downloaded eight years ago (Peter Andre’s Insania comes to mind). Therefore I want to share with you my quick tips on how to make the ultimate writing playlist that will keep you scribbling until the cows come home.

It does NOT have to include classical music
They say classical music is good for concentration, but I don’t always find that the case. Everyone is different and maybe you don’t even want to listen to music – that’s no problem! But if you do want music to help you focus, it’s okay to have songs that have lyrics. Every song does not have to be performed by the London Symphony Orchestra without a vocalist. In fact, if anything you should...

Pick songs you actually like
You should pick some tunes (probably around 30 in total) that you always enjoy listening to and not feel tempted to skip. Skipping is where the distractions start – get your finger off that next button. You’ll need it for super speedy typing.

No loud songs please - or anything else distracting
It might sound obvious, but having songs that are loud or make you want to get up and dance the funky chicken is a NO. NO SERIOUSLY. STOP IT NOW. Get it out of that playlist. It does not belong here.  Sorted? Good, let’s continue.

Keep it mellow
Your playlist should be nice and easy to listen to. The less you pay attention to it, the better. Think about the music they play in coffee shops – it’s easy to ignore. You don’t hit up Costa to rock out, do you? If you do, get help.

So with these tips in mind, I came up with my own writing playlist that I think that I’ll start to use from now on.  You can check mine out now on iTunes here. Hopefully you can also create a playlist that you can use to get the creative juices flowing.  Hope you have fun making one and enjoy your writing this weekend.

And hey – if you found this blog useful or thought that it exudes brilliance, why not give it a like or share on Facebook or Twitter? It would make me warm and fuzzy inside.
